axial skeleton

Skeletal bones orientated in the axial sense, comprising the neurocranium, branchial skeleton, vertebral column and intermuscular bones and ribs.

Located on, around, or in the direction of an axis running antero-posteriorly through the centre of a fish. Opposite of radial.
branchial
Relating to, of, or resembling the gills of a fish.
neurocranium
The section of the skull housing and protecting the brain.
rib
Any of a series of slender curved bones articulated to the spine in pairs, serving to protect the thoracic cavity.
skeleton
In vertebrates, the internal structure composed of bone and/or cartilage that supports the soft tissues and protects the internal organs.
vertebral column
The backbone; the spine; in fishes, the vertebrae running from skull to caudal fin which protect the spinal cord and haemal artery as well as providing attachment for certain muscles used for swimming.
