breeding line

A group of identical, pure-breeding diploid or polyploid organisms, distinguished from others of the same species by a unique phenotype and genotype. Important in production of line breeding ornamental fish strains.

Containing two complete sets of chromosomes, i.e., one from each parent.
line breeding
Selective inbreeding in order to maintain or favour desired traits in organisms. Common in the ornamental fish hobby and industry.
outcrossing
A cross between relatively unrelated individuals; the introduction of unrelated genetic material into a breeding line. Often used to raise or maintain genetic diversity.
phenotype
The observable physical and biochemical traits of an organism, such as its behaviour, external morphology, colour pattern, phenology, etc. Influenced by both genetic and environmental factors.
strain
In ornamental fishes, a group of related individuals developed via selective breeding and sharing common features not present in other strains of the same species.
