ichthyology

Branch of zoology concerned with the study of fishes.

ampullae
Used in ichthyology to describe dilations in the semicircular ear canals of some fishes.
bar
Used in ichthyology to describe a vertical or diagonal marking, normally with well-defined margins, often located on the flank of a fish.
cardiform
Arranged like a series of combs or the wire bristles on a wool card. In ichthyology used most commonly to describe the form and arrangement of teeth in certain species.
character
In ichthyology, any characteristic or its attributes used for recognising, describing, defining, or differentiating species, genera or higher taxa. Also used in phylogenetic analyses whereby ancestral (primitive) characters are termed plesiomorphic and derived (novel) characters apomorphic.
clutch
Used in ichthyology to refer to the number of eggs deposited in a single spawning event, particularly when some form of nest is used.
description
Used in ichthyology in reference to a written description of a new species, usually in the form of a scientifically-published paper though many have been also appeared in aquarium literature, particularly in the late twentieth century. Also referred to as 'type description' or 'original description'.
eye diameter
In ichthyology, the greatest distance between the margins of the eye.
isthmus
Narrow strip of land connecting two larger areas, or a narrow strip of tissue connecting two larger body parts. In ichthyology often used in reference to the fleshy throat region of a fish which externally separates the two gill chambers.
meristics
In ichthyology, the counting of quantitative characters, such as the number of fins, fin rays or scales.
naked
In ichthyology, scaleless or smooth skin.
radial
In ichthyology, a bony or cartilaginous support for a fin ray or spine.
sample
In ichthyology, a collection of fishes made from a particular locality or specified area.
terminal
In ichthyology, situated at or forming the end of, e.g., a 'terminal' mouth is located at the anterior-most part of the head.
zoology
Scientific study of animals, including their classification, structure, physiology, and history; the fauna native to a given area and its composition; the biological characteristics of a particular animal or group of animals.
