Although we didn’t say much about it at the time, this new version of the SF website was launched to more-or-less coincide with our fifth birthday. Over that not-inconsiderable period the majority of our efforts have been aimed at improving our species database to include information, and indeed species, that don’t tend to be covered in depth elsewhere on the web.
While we think we’ve done a decent job so far, particularly in terms of fishes from Asian waters, there’s something we feel is missing. Continue reading »

Spanish conservation group ‘Sociedad de Estudios Ictiológicos’ (SEI) will be releasing thousands of highly-endangered native killifish known locally as ‘fartet’ into a natural lagoon within the Delta del Llobregat natural park, Barcelona on Sunday 28th October, and anyone in the area that day is invited to join them, help liberate the fish, and learn a little about the challenges involved in maintaining aquatic biotopes in an urbanised environment. The genus Pareiorhaphis comprises around a dozen relatively small-growing suckermouth catfish species which are mostly restricted to coastal river drainages between the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul in eastern Brazil. A new member of the genus from the rios Piraquê-Açu and Reis Magos, two small coastal rivers in Espírito Santo state is described in the latest issue of the journal ‘Neotropical Ichthyology’. The Western Ghats mountain range in southern India is well-known as one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots, and in recent years a number of new freshwater fish species have been described from the region, most of which are endemic.
The latest of these is a new hill stream loach of the genus Balitora which represents the third representative of the grouping known from India, and its description has now been published in the Journal of Threatened Taxa. Continue reading »
