Results for “concentric

Ichthyological terms, not general ones.

  • concentric

Of or denoting circles, arcs, or other shapes which share the same centre, the larger often completely surrounding the smaller.

    Used in 10 profiles

  • total dissolved solids

Measure of the total concentration of both organic and inorganic, microscopic particles suspended in a given liquid. Usually applied only to freshwater systems and measured using a conductivity or total dissolved solids meter with results expressed in units of mg per unit volume of water (e.g., mg/L) or parts per million (ppm). Soft water with low pH generally has low levels of total dissolved solids whereas harder water with higher pH tends to contain correspondingly increased concentrations. Often abbreviated to TDS.

  • acidic

Acid; tending to form an acid; having a pH less than 7.0; having a relatively high concentration of hydrogen ions.

    Used in 435 profiles

  • alkaline

Relating to or containing an alkali; having a pH greater than 7.0; having a relatively low concentration of hydrogen ions; able to neutralise an acid.

    Used in 94 profiles

  • dissolved oxygen

The concentration of oxygen dissolved in a water body. Normally expressed in milligrams per liter, parts per million, or percentage saturation.

    Used in 296 profiles

  • eutrophication

Hypertrophication; process by which addition of artificial or natural substances, such as nitrates and phosphates, to a body of water increases the concentration of dissolved nutrients, this in turn stimulating the growth of aquatic plant life, especially phytoplankton, and typically resulting in depletion of dissolved oxygen. Negative effects include reductions in populations of fishes and other organisms incapable of withstanding this hypoxia.

  • general hardness

Measure of the overall concentration of calcium, magnesium and other ions in a water sample with values usually quoted in units of degrees (dGH), of which 1 dGH corresponds to 17.848 ppm. Also referred to as total or permanent hardness.

  • hard water

Water containing high concentrations of mineral salts.

    Used in 45 profiles

  • hyperhaline

Extremely salty or able to withstand extreme concentrations of salt.

  • nitrites

A salt or ester of nitrous acid. Produced in aquaria via metabolisation of ammonia by nitrifying bacteria of the genus Nitrosomonas, and toxic to fishes if present in sufficient concentrations, but in a mature system is further converted into less-harmful nitrates by other bacteria of the genus Nitrospira.

  • osmoregulation

Active regulation of osmotic pressure, especially in the body of a living organism or cell, in order to prevent the body fluids from becoming too diluted or concentrated.

  • salinity

General term for the salt concentration of water.

  • salt bath

Treatment against various parasites which involves placing a freshwater fish in a solution of saline water with the salt concentration and period of exposure variable depending on the size of the fish and severity of infection. Similar to a salt dip in that parasites are killed via osmotic shock, but of longer duration.

  • salt dip

Treatment against various parasites which involves briefly placing a freshwater fish in a solution of saline water with the salt concentration depending on the size of the fish and severity of infection. Similar to a salt bath in that parasites are killed via osmotic shock, but of much shorter duration.

  • silica sand

Sand containing a high concentration of silicon dioxide. Noted in aquaria for its purity, delicate appearance and lack of effect on water chemistry. Also known as silver sand.

  • soft water

Water containing low concentrations of mineral salts, especially calcium or magnesium.
