branchial arch

One of the bony or cartilaginous arches situated on either side of the pharynx that form the support for the gills.

basibranchial
Of, being, or relating to a median ventral cartilage or bony element located at the ventral point of a branchial arch, behind the tongue if the latter is present.
ceratobranchial
Longest bones or cartilages of the branchial arches, located beneath the epibranchials.
gill
Respiratory organ of fishes and some other aquatic organisms comprising a highly-vascularised membrane or outgrowth.
pharyngeal teeth
Opposing patches of teeth located on the upper and lower portions of the branchial arches in many fishes, e.g., cyprinids. Variable in structure and to an extent, function.
pharynx
Section of the alimentary canal connecting the mouth and nasal apparatus with the oesophagus.
visceral arch
One of the bony or cartilaginous arches situated on either side of the pharynx that form the branchial arches and lower jaw.
