Glossary: viviparous
Giving birth to living offspring that develop within the mother's body, e.g., most mammals, many reptiles, some fishes. There is a direct placental or equivalent connection to the mother, meaning that members of the family Poeciliidae are not strictly viviparous and more correctly referred to as ovoviviparous.
