L. elongata is the type species of the genus but according to current knowledge there exist 13 members in total, all of which are endemic to China and northern Vietnam. They're diagnosable by the following shared characters: possession of a simple (non-bifurcated), short sub-ocular spine not extending beyond the posterior edge of the eye; a laterally-compressed body; relatively deep caudal peduncle; pelvic fins reaching origin of anal-fin; anus below base of dorsal-fin and equidistant between pelvic and anal-fin origins.

Known from the middle Mekong basin in Laos and Thailand, and may be endemic to the Khorat Plateau. Records exist from the Mun and Songkhram watersheds in northeastern Thailand, and a number of Mekong tributaries in laos, including the Nam Mang and Nam Kou drainages. Type locality is the Río Calima in Valle del Cauca department, western Colombia. The Calima is a major tributary within the Río San Juan system and N. lacortei is considered endemic to this drainage.

Type locality is given simply as 'Seychelles' and this species was originally endemic to the Granitic Seychelles, i.e., those islands in the centre of the group composed chiefly of granite rock. A translocated population now exists on Zanzibar while in the Seychelles it's known from the islands of Mahé, Praslin, Silhouette and La Digue.

This species is among the most frequently-misidentified in the hobby, almost always being traded as P. kuhlii. However the latter is currently considered endemic to Java, from where commercial collections are almost unheard of, and has possibly never been seen in aquaria.

The fish in our images above were imported together don't correspond to any of the described species of Pangio though they can be assigned to the P. kuhlii species group with a degree of certainty. Unfortunately the live appearance of P. kuhlii itself is a mystery to aquarists since it's currently considered endemic to Java and may have never been seen in the hobby.

Prior to description this species was considered to represent, and traded as, A. rubidipinnis, but that species is apparently endemic to the lower Irrawaddy basin in Myanmar and unknown in the aquarium hobby. Type locality is 'Kota Tinggi, Mawai-Desaru road, Johor, Peninsula Malaysia' and this species is endemic to a small portion of eastern Johor state, Peninsular Malaysia around the towns of Kota Tinggi, Mawai and Desaru. A great deal of its original habitat has been lost via deforestation and other human alterations and it's considered in grave danger of extinction.
