Nematabramis steindachnerii POPTA, 1905

Etymology

Nematabramis: from the Ancient Greek νῆμᾰ (nêma), meaning ‘thread’, and presumably the generic name Abramis.

steindachnerii: presumably in honour of Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner (1834-1919).

Classification

Order: Cypriniformes Family: Cyprinidae

Distribution

Endemic to northern and central Borneo, with records from the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah, Brunei Darussalam, and the Indonesian provinces North Kalimantan (Kalimantan Utara) and East Kalimantan (Kalimantan Timur).

Type locality is ‘Kajan River, eastern slope of central Kalimantan, Indonesia [Borneo]’.

Habitat

Nematabramis species are found a variety of habitat-types, from swiftly-flowing affluent streams to pools, lakes, and degraded swamps.

Maximum Standard Length

The largest specimen recorded to date measured 112 mm.

This species can be distinguished from congeners by the following combination of characters: barbels longer than head but not extending beyond the pectoral-fin base; body relatively slender, depth fits 3.6-4.2 times in SL; head relatively short, length fits 4.6-4.8 times in SL; 9-10 branched dorsal-fin rays; 16-17 branched anal-fin rays.
