Etymology
Aphyosemion: from the Greek aphúe (Gr. ἀφύη), meaning ‘a small fish’, and semeion (Gr. σημεῖον), meaning ‘banner, flag’, in reference to the “ornamented, often lyre-shaped” caudal fin in male individuals of genus members.
erythron: from the Greek eruthrós (Gr. ἐρῠθρός), meaning ‘red, reddish’, in reference to this species’ colour pattern which comprises rows of red dots on the fins and flanks.

Distribution
Described from Río Muni, Equatorial Guinea and appears endemic to south-western parts of the country, with additional collections having occurred in the Río Aye, Río Ecucu and lower Río Benito drainages.
