Cichlasoma boliviense
Bolivia Cichlid
Classification
Cichlidae. Subfamily: Cichlasomatinae
Distribution
Known from the Rio Mamoré, Rio Guaporé and Madre de Dios drainages in both Bolivia and Peru.
Habitat
Shallow pools and slow-moving shorelines.
Maximum Standard Length
4.4″ (11cm)
Aquarium SizeTop ↑
36″ x 15″ x 12″ (90cm x 37.5cm x 30cm) – 100 litres for a pair.
Maintenance
Not critical, will re-arrange the tank decor to suit themselves, so plants are likely to be uprooted. Will appreciate rocky hiding places. Water flow should not be too powerful.
Water Conditions
Temperature: 74 – 80°F (23 – 27°C)
pH: 6.5 – 7.4
Hardness: Up to 15°H
Diet
Not a fussy eater. Cichild pellets as staple diet, meaty foods like prawn and mussel for treats.
Behaviour and CompatibilityTop ↑
Whilst not as aggressive as some of their Central American cousins, this species is only suitable for a community of medium to large fish, such as other cichlids, robust charcins and catfish. There is no guarantee of success in trying this approach however, the more fish in the tank, the more the aggression is likely to be dispersed. Ensure sufficient decor is provided to allow all the fish to claim a territory.
Can also be kept as a species only tank with a bonded pair.
Sexual Dimorphism
Male is the larger fish, is more colourful and has extended dorsal and anal fins.
Reproduction
Few details of breeding in the hobby but likely to be similar to other cichlasoma species and their relatives.
NotesTop ↑
Sometimes referred to (incorrectly) as cichlasoma boliviensis, the Bolivia cichlid is not commonly seen in the hobby. A good candidate for a community of medium sized cichlids, assuming aggression problems can be overcome.
