Behaviour and CompatibilityTop ↑
A fairly peaceful cichlid, unless a pair is breeding. Can be maintained as part of a community setup with tetras, rasboras, small catfish (such as corydoras) and most other small peaceful fish.
Sexual Dimorphism
The male is the larger fish and has much more prominent colouring, especially the blue markings around the gill area that give this fish its common name. The male also has elongated dorsal and anal fins.
Reproduction
Spawning takes place in a cave. The female assumes guard duty at this point and will fearlessly drive away any fish that encroach on her territory, including the male. Eggs hatch in around three days and the fry are free swimming four or five days after that.
Male may not be tolerated in the tank once fry are free swimming and should be removed if attacked.
Fry can be fed on newly-hatched brineshrimp and progressed onto adult foods as they grow.
NotesTop ↑
Rarely seen in the hobby in the UK, but makes an interesting addition to a South American setup.
