NotesTop ↑

H. acaciae can be told apart from all other Hyphessobrycon species inhabiting the Río Orinoco basin  except H. diancistrus, H. metae, H. paucilepis, H. taguae and H. mavro, by the presence of a dark lateral band.

It can be distinguished from these species by presence of four simple anal-fin rays (vs. three), 14 teeth in the dentary (vs. 9-12 in H. niger, H. taguae, H. paucilepis, H . diancistrus, H. metae, and 17 in H. mavro), a low number of scales between the lateral line and pelvic fins (3 vs. 4 except in H. paucilepis and H. niger which also have 3), and the absence of bony hooks on the fins of sexually mature males (vs. presence except in H. paucilepis and H. mavro).

H. acaciae further differs from H. metae by possessing 9-10 pored lateral line scales (vs. 6-7), 5 teeth in the inner premaxillary row (vs. 6), and absence of dark coloration between the lateral line and anal-fin base (vs. presence).

It differs from H. paucilepis by possessing 30-31 scales in the lateral row (vs. 28-29), 3 scales between the lateral line and anal-fin (vs. 4), 10 predorsal scales (vs. 9), ii, 9 dorsal-fin rays (vs. iii, 8), 4 maxillary teeth (vs. 1), and the distance between the dorsal-fin and pectoral fins 24.0-29.4 % SL (vs. 34.9-48.3%).

It is separated from H. taguae by possessing 9-10 pored lateral line scales (vs. 5-7), and the upper jaw measuring 23.1-34.5 % HL (vs. 16.2-22.8 %) and from H. diancistrus by presence of 5 scales between the lateral line and dorsal-fin (vs. 6), 10 predorsal scales (vs. 12), presence of teeth in the maxilla (vs. absence) and 5 teeth in the inner premaxillary row (vs. 6).
