A huge thanks to all that participated in our mini survey this week!
This exercise has been incredibly useful – the depth of feedback received far exceeded our expectations and has offered genuine food for thought in terms of deciding where we go next.
We’ll reveal the results, textual abuse sustained, and of course announce our trio of Amazonas subscription winners very soon.
Thanks again

We’re always striving to improve SF, and as such would like to invite you to complete our first ever user survey, giving us a few details about your habits and preferences which will enable us to decide what to prioritise over the next few months.
What’s more, if you can find 5 minutes to help us out you could win a subscription to the rather wonderful ‘Amazonas‘ magazine, of which we have three to give away!
For us this is the world’s finest in terms of freshwater fishkeeping. It’s been well-known in Germany for a number of years but an English version has been launched recently and our winners will receive their prize in both print and digital formats.
For a chance to win a year’s subscription please be sure to enter your email address (optional) at the end of the survey.
The survey is quite short and should be a relatively painless experience – all you have to do is follow the link below and fill it in by 1800 GMT on Friday 7th June, after which three winners will be picked at random:

Many thanks in advance, we look forward to receiving your feedback and will publish the results after the aforementioned date!

The site should now be working as normal, and please accept our apologies for the extended and unplanned downtime this week.
We’ll be offline again for an hour or two from around 1600 GMT today as there are still a couple of things that need fixing but everything should be back to normal after that.
Thanks once again for your patience and understanding!

The SF forum has undergone a minor reshuffle, with the idea being to makes things a little clearer since there was some ongoing confusion between the ‘Beginners’ and ‘Fishkeeping and Aquaria’ sections.
What we now have is a ‘Fresh and Brackish Water Fishes’ forum for all fish-related discussion and another entitled ‘My Aquaria’ for set-up, stocking, equipment and health topics.
The media forum has been dispensed with and community members are instead encouraged to post photos in the relevant fish or aquarium forum.
We’ve also added a ‘Field trips and Conservation’ forum, mostly because there were a number of threads that didn’t fit into any of the other fora but also because it’s an area of the site we hope to develop going forwards.
Please feel free to add any comments or suggestions either here or in the forum feedback thread.

Facebook is trying to force pages such as ours to pay to advertise every post we make (they’re calling these ‘promoted posts’), and because we haven’t done so, only a randomly-selected 15% of our fans are currently receiving our posts.
If you want to continue to receive posts from SF on Facebook, please do the following: Continue reading »

Although we didn’t say much about it at the time, this new version of the SF website was launched to more-or-less coincide with our fifth birthday. Over that not-inconsiderable period the majority of our efforts have been aimed at improving our species database to include information, and indeed species, that don’t tend to be covered in depth elsewhere on the web.
While we think we’ve done a decent job so far, particularly in terms of fishes from Asian waters, there’s something we feel is missing. Continue reading »
